Book Review

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer L. Armentrout – Book review aka second book syndrome who? * with spoilers!*

Hello lovelies!

I was so nervous to start this one because I didn’t enjoy From blood and Ash as much as I wanted to. But let me tell you…this book!! was!! everything!!

Title: A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire (From Blood and Ash #2)

Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Synopsis: A Betrayal… Everything Poppy has ever believed in is a lie, including the man she was falling in love with. Thrust among those who see her as a symbol of a monstrous kingdom, she barely knows who she is without the veil of the Maiden. But what she does know is that nothing is as dangerous to her as him. The Dark One. The Prince of Atlantia. He wants her to fight him, and that’s one order she’s more than happy to obey. He may have taken her, but he will never have her.

A Choice… Casteel Da’Neer is known by many names and many faces. His lies are as seductive as his touch. His truths as sensual as his bite. Poppy knows better than to trust him. He needs her alive, healthy, and whole to achieve his goals. But he’s the only way for her to get what she wants—to find her brother Ian and see for herself if he has become a soulless Ascended. Working with Casteel instead of against him presents its own risks. He still tempts her with every breath, offering up all she’s ever wanted. Casteel has plans for her. Ones that could expose her to unimaginable pleasure and unfathomable pain. Plans that will force her to look beyond everything she thought she knew about herself—about him. Plans that could bind their lives together in unexpected ways that neither kingdom is prepared for. And she’s far too reckless, too hungry, to resist the temptation.

A Secret…But unrest has grown in Atlantia as they await the return of their Prince. Whispers of war have become stronger, and Poppy is at the very heart of it all. The King wants to use her to send a message. The Descenters want her dead. The wolven are growing more unpredictable. And as her abilities to feel pain and emotion begin to grow and strengthen, the Atlantians start to fear her. Dark secrets are at play, ones steeped in the blood-drenched sins of two kingdoms that would do anything to keep the truth hidden. But when the earth begins to shake, and the skies start to bleed, it may already be too late.(Goodreads)

5 stars: Persephone – Queen of the Underworld and Goddess of Spring. Persephone is my favourite goddess because she is full of contradictions – she represents both strength as queen of the underworld and a softness as a floral maiden. She teaches me how it’s okay to be both. If Persephone appears, that means that the book was one of the best books I’ve ever read, that it holds a particular place in my heart and that it is now part of my favourite books ever.

This book is well worth the hype and more!!
I guess because the series is so loved, I went in with too many expectations and I didn’t feel the spark and excitement for From Blood and Ash as much as I would have wanted to (even if I really enjoyed it!!) But this book??? PHENOMENAL .

I think once we went past all the lies and betrayal we had more time to focus on the characters and the way their dynamic evolved. It was nice to see the chemistry between Poppy and Hawke come back full force while also going forward in the story and delving more into their world.

The world building in this one was amazing and we learned so so much. I love how curious Poppy is as it allows the reader to also find more about the customs and rituals of their world. I liked all the descriptions and the little nods to our world. With Atlantia having running water and roads or even having a clock telling the time; it was nice. I’m not usually a fan of description but it think it was beautifully done here; it was just enough to properly set the world and universe and colours which allowed me to draw up vivid images in my head. It was very clear. That is due to the excellent writing style of the author. They take their time with slower moments like when they share a meal or just do mundane stuff but it never feels boring or gratuitous and I found myself to be as captivated and entertained with the slower moments than with the action-packed ones. The storytelling was fluid and seamlessly followed a certain logic that kept me interested. I like how the author distills the tiniest details to keep us wanting more.

I love how much development we had from the beginning to the end in every aspect.
Of course as I said, the first book didn’t convince me of their possible romance; I think there were too many obstacles and everything seemed fake. But in this one? I believed every single word exchanged between Poppy and Hawke. It all felt real and that happened because the characters acknowledged everything that was in the past and decided to go forward. Poppy and Hawke’s chemistry is insane and I live for their banter. I laughed out loud several times. You could just see the love and attraction between them and I loved the steamy scenes. They are incredibly well-written and left me hot and bothered. It just made so much sense that they are heartmates. and I can’t wait to explore that aspect in the next books.
There was also a lot of development in terms of Atlantia and how much we strayed from the first narrative we were given. So many moments were eye-opening and I soaked up every tiny piece of information. I loved the explanations of the rituals and how things worked in Atlantia. Can I live there?? It seems like such a beautiful place. I like all the history of the place, the gods and the different bloodlines. I hope that in the future we get to encounter more of these bloodlines and learn more about the wolven who I’m fascinated with.
That leads me to my last point which is all the other characters. I think all of the characters are well fleshed out and have their own voice. Kieran is my hero and I love him! I live for his sarcasm. I like all the other wolven (except Alastir; there’s something wrong with him) . I think their group dynamic is hilarious and I like how they tease each other. I care so much about them that when they go into battle in makes me scared for them. That’s saying something.

The last chapters of the book were magnificent me and I flew through them! WOW. I am currently reading book 3 and enjoying it just as much!!

Weekly reading blog; aka getting out my reading slump – *results*

Hello lovelies!

I got out of my reading slump! Woo! 🥳

I had a great reading week! I didn’t choose the best week to do the challenge because I had a lot of homework so I often ended up reading late but I really enjoyed taking the time to relax and taking time for myself. That’s what reading is about and I often tend to forget that. This week was a nice reminder;

Books mentioned

Monday – March 22nd

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Progress: I started my buddy read of A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire with my two friends and read 102 pages.

The week started so well! The story started to grow on me. I felt more connected to the characters and more interested by in the first book.

Tuesday – March 23rd

Progress: Continued reading A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire with my two friends and read until 201 pages.

I am LOVING Poppy and Hawke’s chemistry. It is no secret that I enjoyed the first book but was disappointed by the romantic aspect and especially Hawke. However I’m starting to really see why people like him so much; he’s going to become one of my book boyfriends 👀

Wednesday – March 24th

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Progress: I had started You Should See Me In A Crown and stopped at 116 pages; I initially intended to read only 100 pages but I finished it!

This book. THIS BOOK. Definitely a new favourite! This book was what 16 year-old Karla wishes she had access too. I loved seeing Liz’s growth; seeing her becoming more confident in herself and her sexual orientation. I loved seeing the talk about grief, friendship, betrayal, race, wealth and love. I loved this book with my whole heart. The author’s note is really what made me cry at 3 AM and I have not regrets. Phew. The best. Stay tuned for a fuller review.

Thursday – March 25th

After my small stint and going to bed at 3AM, I couldn’t pick up a book the next day.

Friday – March 26th

Progress: I finally startds A Touch of Death by Rebecca Crunden and I read 50 pages of A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire.

The author approached me for a review of her book so I started it and really enjoyed the quick pace of the story.

Saturday – March 27th

Progress: I only read a little bit of A Touch of Death by Rebecca Crunden.

I didn’t read much; only 50 pages of the book. I was exhausted by the end of the week.

Sunday – March 28th

Progress: I continued A Touch of Death by Rebecca Crunden and made it halfway through! I read 60% of the book.

By this point in the book, I was very curious to see how it would end because so many things were happening

Monday – March 29th

Progress: I finished A Touch of Death by Rebecca Crunden and read a little over a 100 pages of A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire.

I finished A Touch of death! yay! The book was very promising and if you enjoy dystopias this novel is for you. Stay tuned for a full review! I am LOVING A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire! I’m 56% in and I can’t wait to see how it ends.

Overall this was a good week! I didn’t read as much as I had hoped but I did get out of my reading slump and that is a definite win! What did you read this week?

Book Review

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout – Book review 📚

Hello lovelies!

I hope you’re all well.

This book has had so much hype ever since it came out and I finally buddy read this with a friend and I really enjoyed! Here’s my review:

Title: From Blood and Ash (Blood and Ash #1)

Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Synopsis:

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers. The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden. Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel. (Goodreads).

4 stars: Aphrodite – Goddess of love and beauty. That means that I really liked the book, whether it was the writing style, plot or characters. It means it was an amazing book that I would completely recommend for the beautiful piece of art it is. However the book is not a Persephone because something keeps it from making it one of my favourite book ever.

Pheme: The goddess of fame, gossip and renown – This goddess will be invoked when a book has received a lot of attention and is praised by critics and the book community. She will be featured whether the book lived up to my expectations or not.

Medusa – Gorgon. She is mostly known for being a monster, but before she was a monster, she was a beautiful mortal woman with beautiful hair who has been sexually assaulted by Poseidon in a temple dedicated to Athena. As a punishment she was transformed into a monster. This goddess will be featured whenever sexual assault is mentioned in a book. It will also be a trigger warning.

TW: non consensual touches, sexual assault attempts and mentions.

This book?? OMG. I haven’t felt this excited while reading a book in a while.

I loved everything about this.
The plot was really interesting and different from any vampire story I’ve read so far. 2011 vampire-obsessed Karla is grinning from ear to ear and she is very happy. The take of the genre was original and interesting and there were other constants to the vampire genre: werewolves (but better). All the history of the kingdom and everything is really intriguing and I can’t to see how everything evolves.
The story progressed well and the * big* reveal/ twist was not that shocking but it was nice to see all the clues and elements that we had to figure out. I think the lack of surprise for the various twists kept me from loving the book as much as I had hoped; i just expected more.

Also pro-tip don’t make the same mistake that I did seeing art of the two before finishing the book because it kind of spoils everything. But I couldn’t resist; they both look so damn good.

As a new fan of Romance Fantasy; which is my favourite genre by the way, I got my fill of both. As stated earlier the fantasy aspects were great and vampires are my favourite mythical creatures. But THE ROMANCE GUYS. PHEW. I need a cold shower. From the very first scene between Poppy and Hawke I was hooked. I loved reading about Poppy’s sexual awakening and her many firsts. I love how confident she grew and how driven she wass. The banter is one of the best I’ve ever read. I ran out of post-its to bookmark all of their funny and witty dialogue because every single one of their interaction was priceless (so I dog-eared nearly every page; I know it’s a crime but I can’t help it). I know it’s wrong to compare authors but I got the Sarah J Maas “feels” as I read this. And I love that. Poppy is a strong, funny and badass character. I love the fact that she can inflict some serious damage (and that it turns Hawke on) and I could just see her perfectly in my mind being a badass; it’s almost like a dance to her. All of the other characters like Vikter, Kieran, the Duchess, Tawny had a life of their own and they were well-developed.

This book deserve all the hype; I just would have liked to be more surprised by the various twists in the story but the book was enjoyable nonetheless. And that ending?? I have book two with me and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Have you read this? What did you think?

Monthly Wrap Up/ Favorites

Happy Black History Month! January Wrap-Up! February excitement!

Hello lovelies!

Happy February and Happy Black History Month! 💕

February is my favourite month of the year because it’s my birthday month (February 13th) and also because everyone tries to read more diverse books and it makes me really happy!

I had a good reading month in January even if I didn’t read as much as I had hoped; I feel in a little bit of a slump and I started watching a lot of TV instead of reading but by the end of the month I found my mojo again and I’m actually very excited for all of the books I plan on reading this month

Finale by Stephanie Garber ★★★★ I started the year by finishing Finale, the last book in the Caraval series. I think the series wrapped-up nicely and I really liked to see all of the character's arc coming to an end. I preferred the second book but still a nice ending to an enjoyable series! The author announced a few months ago that she would release a book on Jacks and i really loved it so I'm excited for that!

The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L. Jensen ★★★★ I really enjoyed this book! It had been recommended to me on Instagram and it was so unique and captivating! You can see my full review here.

Fable by Adrienne Young ★★★★ I didn't like this book as much as I had hoped but it remained an enjoyable book nonetheless. I really like the ship's crew and their whole dynamic but I especially loved Fable who was an inspiring and resilient strong character. I can't wait to read the second book and see how it all ends.

The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn ★★★★★ My favourite book of the month! I wrote a full review where I gushed about this here. Basically this book contains a lot of my favourite trope and made me believe in love.

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout ★★★★I buddy read this book with a friend and it was such a nice experience! It was fun, action-packed and full of feels and steamy moments! I'm going to upload my review soon!

Paper Princess by Erin Watt. No rating. Call this book the "reading slump slayer"; It is so problematic, unrealistic and trashy BUT it is so addicting and I couldn't put it down. I read this in a day. I didn't expect this to be a series and I might pick up the next book when I have my next reading slump.

This month’s “hopefuls”

I know that realistically I won’t read all of these but I’m going to try my best!

Bridgerton

Do I really need to talk about this show?? I loved the diverse cast, all of the tropes and the quality of the cast and crew. I might upload a post dedicated to the series and what to read after binge-watching the TV show.

Nicola Coughlan is a real star and particularly stood out to me in Bridgerton and people recommended the Derry Girls and it was HILARIOUS. The episodes only watch 20 minutes and tell the story od girls from Londenderry in Ireland in the 90s and it was such a good time; can’t wait for season 3!

This is my sister’s favourite show, with reason and I’m into season 3 and it’s phenomenal. The whole series is magnificient.

Listen. I love love love these characters to death. I am waiting for my own personal Nick Miller. The last seasons were so wholesome and warmed my heart, I wish I could see the series again. And I almost cried with laughter too. Such a great show.

Books coming out this month I’m excited about

There are so many great releases this month! I also received an ARC in December for my Dearest Josephine by Caroline George and I highly recommend it to all of you! And of course A Court of Silver Flames! Any new SJM book is an event in and of itself! There are so many great diverse and books written by BIPOC coming out but these are the ones I’m the most interested about.

What have you been up to last month and what are your plans for this month?

Happy reading to all of you!

Blogmas Day #20 – Next week’s TBR!

Hello lovelies! Welcome to day 20 of blogmas!

I hope you’re all safe and well.

I thought that if I posted next week’s TBR here, I would hold myself accountable and feel ashamed that I didn’t fulfill my promises. So this post is basically me trying to force myself to read.

I have been reading Empire of Storms, Finale and Opposition for weeks now and I’m hoping to finally finish them this week! I’m halfway through Empire of Storms and I love the book so far but I haven’t been able to pick up a physical books for a while now. I hope I’ll manage to do that next week! I’m reading the audiobook of Finale and I have 4h7mn left! My reading pace is 1.8x though, so I might finish it sooner than that. Can’t wait to see how everything ends.I’m 70% done with Opposition and I might finish reading it tonight or tomorrow morning so I’m quite hopeful. I was a little disappointed with the beginning of the story but I’m really enjoying the latter part of the story.

When (if) I manage to pick up a physical book, I would love to start reading The Poppy War!

I want to read Faking Under the Mistletoe before Christmas to put me in the Christmas mood. I have been watching Christmas movies (I watched Love Actually again today!) and I realized that I like Christmas related stuff. Better late than never?

What are you hoping to read next week? Let me know in the comments!

Blogmas Day #14 – Reading Update!

Hello lovelies!

Welcome to day 14 of blogmas! December is passing by way too quickly.

Books I read this week

(ARC) Afterlove by Tanya Byrne – 3/5 stars. This book had an interesting plot but it was much darker than I thought it would be and it was kind of disappointing. See my full review here.

(ARC) Dearest Josephine by Caroline George – 4/5 stars. This book was a nice surprise and I adored the writing style! You can see my full review here.

How the King of Elfhame learned to Hate Stories by Holly Black – 5/5 stars. This book was everything I hoped it would be. Its only flaw was that it was too short because I can never get enough.

Books I’m currently reading

Finale (Caraval #3) – Stephanie Garber. I am halfway through the audiobook and I am really enjoying it so far!! I daresay it’s my favourite of the series. Also the author announced another book featuring one of the characters and I’m going to look into that after I’m done reading to avoid spoilers.

Empire of Storms – Sarah J. Maas. Really hoping i get to finish this this week so I can finally move to the end of the series! I’m loving this book and everything that happens, I’ve just been very busy so picking up my e-reader was easier than this 600+ pages book.

Opposition (Lux #5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I picked it up again today! I was kind of bored reading this but I found my mojo back and I can’t wait to finish this series after so many years.

What I want to read next

Any book I should prioritize?

What are you currently reading? Are you enjoying it? Let me know in the comments!

Blogmas Day #2 -The Joy of Christmas Book Tag

Hello lovelies! Welcome to day #2 of Blogmas!

I found this tag from Sam’s Nonsense‘s Youtube Channel and I thought it might be nice to properly kick off this Christmas season with a Christmas- related book tag! Let’s go!

1) Anticipation: The Christmas excitement is real, what book release(s) are you most anticipating? ❆☃

What did you think? Let me know in the comments!

Blogmas Day #1- November Wrap-Up!

Hello lovelies!

This is the last wrap-up of the year since the one for December will be up by the beginning of January, so in the new year. I always feel nostalgic at the end of the year; I hate endings. But anyway, I had a great month.

My universities physically closed but I still have online classes which are taking up too much, a lot of my time and I haven’t been able to read as much as I would have liked. Thankfully I’m going to be on holiday December, 18th which gives me plenty of time to tackle the books I want to read before 2021 (see my post about that here!). So this month I only read two books but one of them is now one of my all-time favourites so it’s fine.

Books Finished

The Invisible Life of Addie Larue by V.E Schwab. One of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. See my feel review here.

Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu. I’m part of an LGBTQ book club and we chose to read the novella Carmilla which is one of the first vampire stories. It has a sapphic twist (scandalous at the time!) and it actually inspired Bram Stocker’s Dracula; not bad huh?

Currently reading:

Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas. Definitely one of my favourites from the series. It has a strong start and I am obsessed with the group dynamic. Loving every page.

Finale (Caraval #3) by Stephanie Garber. I love this series; I didn’t expect to enjoy it this much since I read a lot of mixed reviews but it has been great so far! Can’t wait to see how it all ends.

Opposition (Lux #5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I adored book 3 and 4 but I’m not enjoyng this one as much; it seems a little chaotic right now but I’m nearly halfway through and there is plenty of time for the story to evolve (hopefully).

This month has been kinder than others. First, I have officially signed a lease for a new apartment in Paris (can’t wait to go back there once everything settles down) and what a relief it was. I waited two months for it and I nearly cried. I used to live in a squalid apartment rented by someone I used to trust and as I said it was stressful. Since everything closed I also went back home and it was nice to be able to spend time with my family and relax. Overall a great month.

This was….THE BEST THING EVER. Okay, I’m being a little dramatic but I was so hooked that I watched the entire season in one sitting; (there are only 9 episodes of 35 mins each). The plot was incredibly well thought and well carried out. Kenny Ortega aka the director of both High School Musical and Descendants directed most of the episodes. The songs are so incredible that I wish the band existed in real life. I added all of them on Spotify as soon as I finished watching the show. The actors are all incredibly talented and the chemistry between the characters was to die for. So so so good.

This month I didn’t read much so I saw more movies than usual which was nice. I rewatched some old favourites such as Tangled and 10 Things I hate about you. Those are in my top 5 favourites; I love these movies to death. I also rewatched Avalon High since I’m a sucker for retellings: this is a retelling of the King Arthur myth with a feminist twist. It’s not the best movie ever but it does the trick. I also watched Titanic and I love it more than ever. I feel like it even gets better with time? This movie is a true masterpiece.

I (finally!!) watched A Cinderella Story and as I said earlier I love retellings and nothing beats Cinderella retellings. It was pretty great. I also enjoyed watching A Christmas prince which is officially my first Christmas movie of the year. I really enjoyed it and it was actually better than I expected.

What are some of your favourite moments from November? Let me know in the comments!

Reading Project · Reading Update

Books I’m hoping to read before the year ends!

Hello lovelies!

I am very happy to report that I reached my Goodreads challenge of reading 50 books this year! I’m so proud of myself! Last year I managed to read 45 books and right now I read 6 more books than last year. Of course lockdown and quarantine are reasons why I read more; but I also joined book twitter and took my bookstagram more seriously so I discovered so many great books and people who pushed me to read more. Overall I have had a great reading year so far. Since I don’t have the pressure of reaching my Goodreads goal, I’m free to read how many books I like!

I have so many books I want to read but realistically, with my slow reading pace and my busy school schedule, I don’t think I’ll manage to read all of my “end of the year hopefuls” but we’ll see. Here’s my list:

Finish the Throne of Glass series and start Crescent City

I’m currently reading Empire of Storms and I AM LOVING IT. And I really want to finish the series this year but the books are all quite big (600- 800 pages) and I don’t think I’ll have enough time to read everything before 2021. But let’s be hopeful!

The Poppy War – R.F Kuang

I have seen this book everywhere so I gave into tentation and I bought it last month. Since I didn’t read as much as I had hoped, I haven’t gotten around to this. I’m hoping to read this one before the year ends!

Advanced Reading Copies

I had the brilliant idea of requesting books on Netgalley, when I already have so many books on my physical TBR but I just couldn’t resist. Afterlove is a sapphic book about Ash who is about to become a reaper in the afterlife but who is determined to see her first love Poppy Morgan again. Dearest Josephine is a book about a girl who discovers old love letters written by an elusive novelist two centuries before and it seems like she is the heroine….So excited to read these!

Opposition (Lux series #5)

This is the last book in this series! I started it years ago and I finally managed to reach book 5! This is one of my favourite series and I really want to see how it all ends!

Finale (Caraval #3) by Stephanie Garber

I have read the two previous books as audiobooks so I purchased the third one also as an audiobook! The narrator is fantastic and I can’t wait to see how everything all ends.

Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo

The raving reviews were enough for me to instantly buy this book. This book follows the life of 12 Black and British women through their hardships and victories. I really want to read this before the year ends.

That’s it! Fingers crossed! Thank you for reading xx
